Menemen eggs with tomatoes and green peppers in a copper pan at Berna's Bakery and Cafe, 317 NW Gilman Blvd in Issaquah, WA

Menemen in Issaquah, cooked in a copper pan

If you searched for menemen near you and you are anywhere around Issaquah, you found it. I make it the way it is made at home in Turkey: fresh peeled tomatoes and green peppers, eggs scrambled into them or left sunny-side up, all cooked in a copper pan. It comes with our house bread, which is there for one job, the sauce at the bottom of the pan.

What menemen is

Menemen is the egg dish of a Turkish breakfast table. The tomatoes and peppers go into the pan first and soften into a sauce, then the eggs go in. Scrambled or sunny-side up is an old argument in Turkish homes. I do not take sides. You choose, I cook it your way.

Four egg pans, one kitchen

Menemen is the classic. These are its three cousins, and each one comes from a different corner of the Turkish kitchen.

  • Menemen Eggs. Fresh peeled tomatoes, green peppers and eggs, scrambled or sunny-side up, cooked in a copper pan and served with our house bread.
  • Sujuk & Eggs. Turkish beef sausage mixed with scrambled eggs, cooked the old way and served with our bread bun.
  • Kavurma & Eggs. Tender, slow cooked beef sautéed with eggs, scrambled or sunny.
  • Pastirma & Eggs. Cured Turkish beef brisket, pan-seared with eggs.

A halal breakfast in Issaquah

All of the food we serve is prepared to Zabiha halal standards. That covers the sujuk, the kavurma and the pastirma above. If your family eats halal, the whole breakfast menu is open to you, not just the dishes without meat. On the Eastside that is rarer than it should be.

Coming with two or three people?

Then order the Breakfast Party Spread. It puts a pan of menemen in the middle of the table and circles it with cheeses, olives, house jams, fresh vegetables, fruit, garlic carrot cream, and clotted cream with honey. It comes with simit, two bread buns and endless tea or coffee. I wrote more about it in our Turkish breakfast guide.

Eating alone or with one friend? Add a side or two to your menemen: Assorted Cheese, Assorted Olives, Tomato & Cucumber, or our House Adjuka. A simit next to the pan is never a mistake, and neither is a glass of Turkish çay.
